Qantas is having a special fare promotion to Bali from now until 14th August or until sold out. The cost of a return ticket to Bali from Singapore starts from S$188

Tickets are valid for departure from Singapore between 7th August and 30th September.

Bali Ranked World’s Best Island

Bali has been ranked No. 1 World’s Best Islands by readers from Travel and Leisure Magazine. This is the 11th annual poll by the magazine and it is the fifth time that Bali has won first place in the Island category.

Bali was closely followed by Kauai and Maui in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. The poll was taken in early 2006 by readers of Travel and Leisure Magazine and judged based on natural attractions, activities, restaurants, people and value.

Other winners include Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Mount Desert Island in Maine, Tasmaniz, Hawaii, Galapagos Islands, Santorini and Phuket in Thailand.

Ubud Festival

If you’ll be spending time in Ubud this month or next, be sure to catch the activities in the first ever Ubud Festival, organized by the Ubud Community Board.

According to Anak Agung Gede Ariawan, Director of Public Relations, the festival of events and activities is designed to lift the spirits of the people to motivate them, and revitalize the aspects of community which have suffered since the first Bali bombing. The month long festival, to be held from July 16th to August 17th will involve 13 banjars, and around 2,500 families. It will be unique as it is involving the community at large for the purpose of healing the community by cultural activity. (more…)

Ingredients for Balinese Cooking

Galangal (isen): Fresh root, also known as laos or galingale. Resembles fresh ginger but has a thinner, translucent skin and more astringent flavor.

Fruit Salad with Palm Sugar Syrup (RUJAK)
Beef Satay Recipe (BATE SAMPI)
Minced Chicken Satay Recipe (SATE LILIT)
Shrimp Satay Recipe (SATE UDANG)
Yellow Rice Recipe (NASI KUNING)
Vegetables for Satay (LALAB)
Spicy Peanut Sauce Recipe (BUMBU KACANG)
Tomato Sambal (SAMBEL TOMAT)
Chili in Soy Sauce (TABIA LALAH MANIS)
Black Rice Pudding (BUBUH INJIN)

1. Measure 3 to 4 ounces uncooked shrimp-flavor crackers (krupuk; about 1 1/2 cups 2-in.-wide rounds, or 12 rectangular pieces 4 1/2 by 1 1/2 in.).2. In a wok (at least 14 in.) or 5- to 6-quart pan, pour salad oil to a depth of about 1 1/2 inches. Set pan over high heat and bring oil to 350 [degrees] on a thermometer. Adjust heat to maintain oil temperature.

3. Drop 3 to 5 rounds or 1 rectangular cracker into oil and, with a slotted spoon, turn to cook other sides; they puff almost immediately At once, lift from oil and drain in paper towel-lined pans. Repeat step to cook remaining krupuk.

PREP AND COOK TIME: About 25 minutes NOTES: Fried in oil, krupuk puff into crisp, featherweight, bubble-filled chips. The chips can be fried up to 1 day ahead; store airtight. MAKES: 10 tO 12 servings
